Deaf Ministries in Southern Europe
Joyce Voelker in Lisbon, Portugal
My husband and I are Baptist missionaries in Lisbon, Portugal with the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE). Our main responsibility is directing a school for missionary kids. We are not here to do deaf ministry but God has opened a few small doors and I am learning Portuguese sign language. I was involved in church interpreting in Iowa for years before God called us to Portugal. I meet together monthly with two other ladies, one a missionary and one a Portuguese believer.

We share a burden for the deaf in Portugal. No one here is telling them how to have a personal relationship with Jesus. All three of us are beginning to learn the sign language here. I am praying for a partnership with a deaf ministry in the US who could perhaps come to Portugal annually for evangelistic campaign, deaf camp, musical programs or drama....?? or for missionaries to the deaf who could live and minister here in Portugal.
